![]() ![]() ![]() This document is not inclusive of all pitfalls but it tries to explain the major issues. This page aims to document some of the pitfalls of building packages so that they work with the rpm and tools above rpm w/o seriously unexpected consequences. So a sysadmin will often need to provide, for example 4 different versions of php on a single system: php4, php5, php5.1 and php5.2 to maintain compatibility with some web application that their infrastructure wishes to run. Quirks or features in various versions are used by applications and/or external module compatibility is linked to a specific version. This is often requested with regard to scripting/dynamic languages like python, ruby, perl, php, etc. ![]() The idea is to allow the user/admin to use any of them b/c of specific features/bugs that they have or do not have. It is often requested to allow rpm and tools above rpm to allow the same application to be installed multiple times with different versions. ![]()
